About

Hello!

Here is a bit about my background:

I have a Bachelor’s of Science General degree from the University of Alberta and a certificate in editing from Simon Fraser University, achieving honours with distinction in both.

I have worked as an editorial assistant and a marketing assistant for McGill-Queen’s University Press for several years. Now that I am living on Vancouver Island, I volunteer to copy edit articles for the West Coast Editor. I am a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada and the Professional Editors Association of Vancouver Island.

On a side note, I have also worked as a door-to-door sales person and a hired spy in Australia and as the slave of a volatile Olympic horseback rider in LA. I have navigated the web of Tokyo’s metro system, protested through the streets of Montreal and Chicago, and trekked the volcanoes of Iceland. I have been a member of two indie bands and wrote a young adult fantasy novel. I have studied forensic anthropology and biology, as well as creative writing. With my attention to detail, sensitivity to the story and editing experience, I can make a good book great.

The subject areas I am most familiar with include:

  • Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, paranormal)
  • Mysteries and thrillers
  • Travel memoirs
  • Children’s Literature

I have edited many forms of writing, such as poetry, movie scripts, novels, short stories, technical documents, and scientific articles. The references I use are the Chicago Manual of Style and the Oxford Dictionary. However, please let me know if you have any style preferences.

I have a lot of experience working with authors. I will be diligently communicating with you throughout the editing process. My priority is to help you, the author, express your voice in the best way.

I look forward to working with you. Thank you for considering me.

Sincerely,

Katie Heffring
